The English Language Is Really Weird

English is super weird. The language is absolutely crazy and has almost no consistency. It’s just an insane mishmash of other languages, with words spelled the same with different meanings. Or words that sound exactly the same but are spelled differently or vice versa (we also just throw in random latin, or french, etc). WHYYY? How does anyone learn this language? LOL! Here is a collection of posts definitively proving that point:

  1. Jail and Prison are actually different things, officially, even though most use them interchangeably in common parlance. A jail is what is actually at the police station. You may stay there the night, or over the weekend. It can also be a temporary holding building for pre trial purposes, in some areas. The prison is where you serve your actual sentence.

  2. “Handy” is also an adjective used to mean “skilled at manual labor” (i.e. labor performed with the hands). As a native English speaker, I learned the slang from this post.
