A Brief Guide to European Swords and Making Swords

Check out this neat guide to swords infographic designed by Yuexin Huo that introduces the history of European swords, with all kinds of info about different types of swords. And also an infographic about how European swords were and are made in ancient times and modern time. Here’s an overview from the artist:

“European Swords provides information about swords in European cultures from ancient times to the latest issued ones. Swords are divided into three categories here, and their inter-related developments are shown. For each type of sword, typical shape, average length, weight, and related fencing masters are provided with descriptions.

Swords have changed drastically in our history, so does type. An old style type with organic and elegant letterforms such as Jenson is chosen to give the piece an ancient feeling. We know less about earlier types of swords and their related martial arts in general, so a gradient of red is used to represent time.”

Here is the making swords info: “Making Swords shows how European swords were and are made in ancient times and modern time. Step-by-step process is shown to give details of sword making, revealing the secret behind the sacred weapon. Graphics are strongly emphasized to minimize the need of texts for easier understandings. Color codings are given to differentiate between ancient and modern times as well as if the working piece is heated. The large sword illustration in this infographic is life-size.”
