Lighting in Modern Film

This is a pretty valid point about lighting in modern film and television. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is a great example of being filmed perfectly to view in detail. The example of being too dark to see properly was “The Long Night” Game of Thrones season 8, episode 3. It caused a bunch of controversy over whether or not it was really filmed too dark or if fans just need to adjust their tvs. I think if you need to adjust your tv to see something correctly they’ve probably made mistake in filming. But the episode’s director of photography Fabian Wagner lays the blame instead on people’s TV settings. Anyway, here’s a note to filmmakers from a fan:

  1. Lack of lighting in a scene in an SF or fantasy film is a way to save on the set expenses and the special effects budget.
