
I know this is probably going to make a bunch of patriotism loving Americans big mad, but the Pledge of Allegiance is creepy. To other countries, almost all of which don’t do this, it seems super weird and creepy. Here’s why:

It wasn’t too much longer until “Under God” was added to the Pledge, along with “In God We Trust” being put on US currency.
Apparently just before I started primary school (mid-70s) there was a similar pledge in Australia:
“I am an Australian. I love my country. I salute her flag. I honour her Queen. I promise to obey her laws.”
I never actually had to say it. We did sometimes sing the National Anthem, which began “Australia’s sons, let us rejoice”. I recall wondering what was meant by “Australia’s sunset ostriches”.
