Melodia Ludi tweeted this hot take that crafts are more important than fine art. To be fair, crafts are more relevant to my life since most crafts have a purpose like knitwear or crochet, jewelry, metal working, pottery, etc. Yet fine art doesn’t really serve any purpose for me. Also I love supporting artists and small businesses who sell handmade stuff on Etsy, but could pretty much never afford any real pieces of fine art, nor would I want to pay the exorbitant prices. Nothing against fine art, it has historical value and sure going to the art gallery every once in a while is nice. But crafts are for the people, not just the elites. Anyway here is their controversial opinion on crafts vs fine art:

I was about to throw down because performing arts are fine arts as well. Music, theater, dance — fine arts as much as painting and sculpture.
What @mudwrestlr seems to be reacting to is the overvaluation of physical artworks as seen in museums, galleries, and homes. That overvaluation is, in large part, intentional. At the level of valuation he’s talking about, owners of fine art can essentially make up a number they want it to be worth and use that for tax deductions and insurance and financial disclosures.
But that’s not the fault of the artists. We need artwork in our lives just as much as we need music and theater and dance — and craft. And artists must create — that’s what it means to be an artist. It doesn’t have to be functional to have value. And the vast majority of fine artwork is /not/ the overvalued status symbols that the rich and famous trade.
