The Elephant’s Foot at Chernobyl

WTF!?! This is why it’s called a nuclear “meltdown”. “The Elephant’s Foot” is the nickname given to a large mass of corium and other materials formed under the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Pripyat, Ukraine. It was formed during the Chernobyl disaster of April 1986, and is highly radioactive. It is actually only one small part of a much larger mass that lies beneath Reactor No. 4. This post does however exaggerate the danger a little. You would not instantly die if you looked at it. At the time of its discovery, about eight months after formation, radioactivity near the Elephant’s Foot would deliver a lethal dose within five minutes. Since that time the radiation intensity has declined even further. But it is still extremely dangerous. Still do not look at it, lol! Once again, thanks science!
