Strangely enough, this was written 9 years ago, but I also see the eerie parallels!
That is a fitting, brutal, but equitable ending. Also, dumb but sadly not unheard-of politically: if they’re invading your allies, and you do not stop them, when they come for you there will be even fewer people in the alliance. A well written short story.
If you throw your children to the tiger to save your own life you only postpone the inevitable… and who wants to battle a well-fed tiger who already has the taste of you?
