Mary Robinette Kowal tweeted this genius thread about NASA’s history of peeing in space and it is a wild ride. This is the funniest, unintentionally funny twitter thread I’ve ever read. This is not fiction, these are actual facts that actually happened. She posted this twitter thread since a bunch of people claimed that “women couldn’t go to space because we lacked the technology for them to pee in space” in response to her To Make It to the Moon, Women Have to Escape Earth’s Gender Bias article in The New York Times. That is of course just more gender bias. It turns out we didn’t really have sufficient tech for anyone to properly pee or poop in space. It seems just peeing into the suit and bags taped to our asses is the pinnacle of human ingenuity. Anyway, let’s talk about peeing in space:
This. Actually. Happened. (At least mostly.) Here is the Snopes article, Spacesuit Envy – Did NASA have to relabel the size chart for a condom-like urination contraption used in space suits because astronauts refused to choose the ‘small’ size?
