This Thing In A Box wrote this amazing response to a writing prompt about a mimic. Here’s the prompt: “Why did you give the last of your food to that poorly disguised mimic? You were finally at peace with letting go, but now this odd thing won’t leave you alone and is even turning itself into various items in an attempt to aid you.”
If you’re not familiar, mimics are creatures often found in fantasy and role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. They are shape-shifting monsters that have the ability to disguise themselves as inanimate objects such as chests, doors, weapons, etc. A mimic will lie in wait for an unsuspecting adventurer to interact with the object it is disguised as. When the adventurer reaches for the object, the mimic will suddenly reveal its true form and attack.
Wow. That’s an interesting story idea. I’d definitely read more of that.
