Canonically, I think Hobbits do wear boots in very cold weather, when the hair on their feet provides insufficient protection. Then again, Pippin’s never been out of the Shire before, so maybe he actually doesn’t know how boots work
Any such researcher who doesn’t know they’re also part of the study (since their reaction strongly influenced the willingness to eat) should go back and study themselves first.
