Any ultimatum, I have left more than one relationship over an ultimatum that was essentially pointless. I would stay with someone who cheated before I stayed with someone who offered up an ultimatum.
The idea that someone would even SUGGEST getting rid of my cat would be an immediate– I was going to say red flag, but that doesn’t really cover it. It is basically saying, “We are now broken up, I just don’t realize it yet.”
Pets are not an accessory. They aren’t furniture. (possibly fur-nature, but I digress) They are chosen family. If there are issues, I’m willing to try to work through them in order to keep both partner and pet, but don’t ever ask me to abandon her.
Understandable ultimatum example: you either start doing your part in keeping up our home and lives or you can leave.
Ridiculous ultimatum: get rid of your cat that hates me and everyone else cuz we treated it like a toy til it decided to attack first and ask questions never. I know we provide no stimulation for it or places for it to perch and hide, but it should allow whatever I want.
Though there are some that I get, like the animal hates children and will attack them for existing in the same space even if they leave the animal alone, but you have kids. That is something I’m not happy about, but completely get why rehoming the poor thing to a person that doesn’t have or want children for its own happiness and safety. (Note: I don’t mean the cat scratches if a kid gets too close either, I mean if It’s-On-Sight, violence will be had)
