Mentrification: How Fandoms Change When Men Start To Like Them

Wow. So “mentrification” just entered my vocabulary and it is the perfect way to describe this phenomenon. The best examples in this thread are Star Trek and The Beatles, but I’m sure there are many more. Gatekeeping in fandom or any space is such a shame.

  1. Good post on mentrification, however interesting to juxtapose the spirit of the article with ‘related’ links which included one on fandom bikinis…

  2. Get over it, ok. If you actually care about a fandom or whatever, shouldn’t matter how you’re perceived. I have the same trek convos with my friends who are men and women, regardless of their gender… shocker, right? Someone actually teasing people equally. To reiterate, stop blaming all your hangups on white men, m-kay. Now have nice day.

      1. Lol, right?! As a (enby AFAB) data scientist who started using programming languages like R pretty early in their history and now has to PROVE my knowledge and “fandom” to people who fit the stereotypical data scientist mold, I say to Michael, “No, YOU get over it. If being told that the original fans/stans/knowledgeable people were women makes you feel strong emotions, you’re likely part of the problem.” And yes, gatekeeping is a very real thing within many fandoms and fields, and it is rarely being done by non-men

  3. The Chemical Wedding, by Johann Valentin Andreae in 1616 was the 1st science fiction story. Know your facts before making false assertations.

    1. Nope, it’s the third Rosicrucian manifesto all about inner transformation of the soul and mysticism-tinted symbols you ‘walk through’. Where’s the science fiction in THAT, you eedjut? Typical of a man to try to misuse an author to ensure ‘man came first’…
