Much like Gene Roddenberry, Lou Scheimer was very ahead of his time. Which makes it unsurprising that Filmation made the animated Star Trek series in the early 1970’s.
A couple points of order, the He-Man cartoons didn’t have a “small following of little girls”. A full 40% of the audience and toy sales were going to girls. That’s almost half the audience!
Also, while Bravestarr was the first acknowledged Native American cartoon lead protagonist, John Blackstar, lead of the Blackstar cartoon that premiered in 1981 was also originally intended to be Native as well. It was just never explicitly said.
