The original six Marvel Cinematic Universe Avengers Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), and Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) had all planned to get matching tattoos. They got the Avengers logo and their individual superhero logos intertwined with the number 6. But you may know one of the six didn’t get the tattoo. That would be Mark Ruffalo.
Downey Jr. told Entertainment Weekly at the time: “Five of the original six Avengers got a tattoo. And the sixth was the tattoo artist, who gave it to five of us, the one who opted out being Mark Ruffalo. Each one of us drew a line on the artist with his own tattoo gun and it was a total massacre. Each of us contributed to giving the tattoo artist the sixth tattoo that he designed for us.”
It turns out Mark Ruffalo didn’t get the tattoo because of his fear of needles. He said during an appearance on The Tonight Show: “I didn’t get a tattoo. I opted out of the tattoo. First of all, I’m afraid of needles. So there’s that. But also I kind of have a punk rock soul. And I felt like ‘Dude, everyone has tattoos. I’m gonna be punk rock and not get the tattoo.’ Honestly, I feel left out, and I’m working up the courage to get needled.” That’s right, the Hulk is afraid of needles.
