AO3 (Fanfiction Site) Is for People Who Used to Read 24/7

This makes a lot of sense and is super relatable. Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a nonprofit open source repository for fanfiction and other fanworks contributed by users. So a lot of people who used to read 24/7 as a kid but are now burnt out and have no attention span are really into it. There is an actual reason for this which is explained here:

  1. actually not a fanfic, but I am listening to HFY/aka greentext stories/aka Humans are space orcs on Youtube. Channels NetNarrator and Zren. Its onle of the best things to keep me running these dark days…

  2. Huh. I’m currently on the assessment waiting list, and I’m a sucker for a fractured fairy tale. Wonder if this is why?

  3. I’ve used Ao3 a few times but my main “fix” these days is a website called Fimfiction.net which is filled with stories based on the TV show My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. The amazing thing is the creative diversity from AUs to Crossovers, Tragedy, comedy, short fluff to million-word epics that put Encyclopedia Britannica to shame. Some of the fics even got recognized by outside circles, some years ago one called Background Pony was placed on a suggested summer reading list from one of the big Ivy League schools Harvard or Yale.

That being said I still occasionally read outside non-fan books, and truthfully I was initially wary of this article as the title sounded like some anti-posts I’ve seen by “established authors” who see no point in our pointless drivel when we could be reading proper literature, that is of course to say, theirs.

  4. This is an interesting theory that I can definitely relate to. As a child I used to love reading Reader’s Digest condensed books. I love James Michener but his books are so long. I had to read them a section and then wait a few months before I went back. I love fanfiction because I get to look at life from lots of different perspectives. I’ve learned so much and become more tolerant and understanding of people who might be different from me.
