At one point they need the help of the local tough rebel student. She’s always being punished, she smokes, she *gasp* dies her hair in non-allowed colours! But she’s the only one with a sliver of hope to bypass a very specific hazard. Everyone thinks she will mock them and say no, but she accepts without hesitation. When asked why she says “I wish my sister had friends like you when she came out”. She crumples her cigarette and goes “let’s do this”.
A low-key romance develops between the tough girl and the swotty, shy, bespectacled girl. None of them seem to acknowledge it until the tough girl has to “sacrifice” herself to let the group escape (there’s no real risk but everyone is living the drama at 200%). The shy girl grabs the tough girl face, snogs her senseless (pan to the reaction to everyone watching, from horror to glee) and says “you’ll come back to me, you hear me?”.
Post-credit scene is, effectively, the tough girl coming back.
