Christmas in Middle-earth

This is a great post about how Christmas is canon in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Not only that but, since Christmas exists that means there must be a Middle-earth Jesus. But hobbits seem to be the only ones who have the concept of Christmas which means it was probably a hobbit Jesus. So Hobbit Jesus is canon. Anyway this post goes into the reasons for this:

  1. I think that when translating names you can go a number of ways – just using the name, replicating the pronunciation or replicating the meaning. It seems Tolkien replicated meanings from older languages. Similarly, my French translation of LOTR replicates meanings: Rivendell is rendered as Fendeval, “broken valley” and the Hobbit name Bracegirdle is rendered as Serreceinture, “shake-belt”.
