This amusing post brought to my attention that Daredevil and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles both got their power from the same radioactive goo. The TMNT origin story paid homage to the first issue of the Daredevil comic book from 1963. In it Matt Murdock is blinded by a radioactive isotope while saving an old man from an oncoming truck. Eastman and Laird decided that after the canister with the isotope hit Murdock, it also hit a bystander. He happened to be carrying a fishbowl containing his four pet baby turtles. The turtles and the canister then fell down a grate into the sewer, where they were discovered by a rat, Splinter. Laird confirmed that Splinter’s name was nod to the Daredevil supporting character named Stick. Anyway here’s the post that made me look into this crazy connection:
