Jennifer Harrison tweeted this thread explaining Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel’s character arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is why it resonated with so many women. And also perhaps why so many men did not understand it (or just straight up hated it):

So well written. I -loved- her character arc and the best part of the movie for me -was- when she ignored Jude’s jibes and blasted him. “I have nothing to prove to you.”
And wankmuffin and spunktrumpet are now my two favourite insults.
Sadly, folks had a hard time with Black Panther…for entirely similar reasons.
You can argue, “this is about feminism.” But this is also about a pre-existing comic book character who is loved and appreciated for her actual rise to power. She was a hero who lost her powers to Rogue and then became one of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe. Her training arc could have been done with the female Mar-vell, not the shitty Jude law fake version. So it’s great that you wanted an example of feminisms ability to rise to power but as a result, it tarnished a great story and a potential female mentor who has literally no significance in this movie save for a cameo from Annette Benning who would have been a GREAT mentor to her character but was largely wasted.
