First Pride Story

This is an eye-opening story about being dragged to a pride protest across the street from a Pride festival. This is a really sad way for a kid to experience Pride for the first time, but the supportive people they met on the other side really turned it around. “Pride month may be over, but the impact this month and these events can have is so damn important. I became who I am because of two people I met at a pride festival. I’ll never forget.”

  1. Acceptance is everything. I am a 66 year old female who came out at about 40. My wife took me to the St Louis Pride around 2002, and it was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. Yeah, some of it was “slap a rainbow on it and double the price” stuff, but the atmosphere was rare. I hadn’t ever seen same-sex couples acting like couples in the daytime outside in public. I was dazzled by the casual hand-holding and hugs. It was miserable hot and humid, but the teenage boy in a thong and feathers and body glitter on his skateboard didn’t care, and the only comments I heard about him were good. There were even a few “Christians with tracts”, but they were very low-key. How interesting for you to get such a clear visual at a young age – the good side and the bad side.
