TW: stalking, violence. Claire Willett tweeted this thread about “what it’s like being a woman” in response to this vile post from a sick man who openly admits to getting off on stalking and purposely scaring a young girl for fun. Like she says, the worst part of this is that almost every single woman has a story like this:

I learned at 16 that I should never ever get in the front seat of a cab ever. I thought it was weird and a little rude to sit in the back of the cab like some princess, but after being groped by a cab driver I will never again go in the front seat, especially not if I am going alone. I have no idea how a person can behave so shamelessly, I am happy nothing worse happened but it really scared me at the time. I was a child, ffs.
I always turn on ‘share my ride’ in the Uber app before getting in the car. I avoid anything that looks like approaching a woman who is alone if at all possible unless I’m with a woman who can approach whilst I hang back until invited closer. If it’s not unavoidable, e.g. if she appears unwell or incapacitated, I stand well back and ask her if she’s OK and call the emergency services if needed. If I’m walking at night and notice a woman walking in front of me alone I’ll cross the road as soon as it’s safe to do so. All of these actions are for my own protection.
