The novel is Quarantine by Greg Egan – worth a read for sure.
In Larry Niven’s Ringworld, there is a species that believe luck is a hereditary trait, and that humans naturally had strong luck, so they manipulated generations of partners to try and breed the luckiest beings in the galaxy.
Does this guy understand that Captain Kirk, Han Solo, etc., are protected by Plot Armor?
So are aliens, at this point. But there are also plenty of real-world examples of people who have faced down overwhelming odds and come out alive. Situations where, on paper, a group ABSOLUTELY should have died, but a combination of luck, will, and a good leader got them out practically unscathed.
Yeah all that happens because it’s fiction. It makes a good exciting story. That’s all.
