Not a Single Canon Queer In Avengers: Infinity War

Kate Leth made a good point about the sad state of queer representation in Avengers: Infinity War. Now there’s some queer characters in the comic books, but very little representation in the more mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is a shame. Marvel later made a tiny attempt at adding some representation in Avengers: Endgame with that scene featuring “the first openly gay character” in Captain America’s support group after the snap. While that is something, it was a very small scene with a peripheral unnamed character who was basically an extra with a line or two. Again, it’s a start and a tiny attempt at being inclusive, but its obviously not enough. We’ve got a ways to go.

Anyway, I hope change is coming, there’s no reason not to have LGBTQ+ representation with such a huge and diverse cast of characters. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed for Loki in his (or her!) upcoming Disney+ show, after all Genderfluid Loki Is Canon. Let’s also keep our fingers crossed for Valkyrie in Thor: Love and Thunder. After all, love is love. ❤️

  1. I can never forget that gay man from the beginning of Endgame. Because Tony didn’t want to risk not having a kid in the alternate timeline they’d create if they used the gems to prevent Thanos from winning in the first place that man, who was finally moving on from his “snapped” lover will now have to deal with the consequences of being in a relationship with someone else when their old lover returns.

Tony – not to mention the writers – just didn’t give enough thought to how awful things would be if they did it his way and that poor gay man in Cap’s support group was all I was able to think about from the point of the movie where Tony agreed to help them until the end.
