willowenigma wrote this interesting post about Steve Rogers aka Captain America from Marvel Comics and The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. Steve read The Hobbit in the 30s or 40s and then goes into the ice. When he comes out he assumes the book was forgotten. But then he realizes that The Lord of the Rings is a sequel to The Hobbit and is super excited:

Except no, not MCU Steve. MCU Steve IS Frodo. Because he went back. He sailed. But it’s slightly better, because he’s not going off into “totally not heaven”, ie death, but, well… it’s kind of heaven. Even Frodo stuck around for a while and tried. So did Steve. Steve fought. And Steve is tired.
Ah, but so did Sam, in the end. Tolkien’s appendices explain that Sam lived a long life with his family (fourteen children!), was mayor of the Shire like four times, travelled across the kingdom visiting old friends . . . and then, in his old age, he set sail from the Grey Havens to follow Frodo, which he could do as someone who had (albeit briefly) borne a ring.
And then Cap watches The Hobbit and realizes that Bilbo bears a striking resemblance to Agent Everett Ross…
K but I love this also because it’s actually consistent to the comics as well. In Avengers 46 Steve mentions that he’s reading a Tolkien novel. It doesn’t specify which novel, but we can make some assumptions.
