What. The. Actual. Fuck. This is real, in 2021. Who would think this was a good idea for teaching children / young adults?
The “chivalry” assignment given to students at Shallowater High School in Texas instructed girls to “dress in a feminine manner to please men”, “not complain or whine”, “never criticize a male”, “walk behind men daintily as if their feet were bound” and so many more completely fucked up things.
You can see the full set of “rules” below, with a line for an “adult witness signature” next to each. The assignment also said “Ladies must obey any reasonable request of a male”. This is clearly offensive to women, but also men. It implies that men will be offended if women “show intellectual superiority” to them. The fact that a school would think this is a good idea is just offensive to everyone, lol.
And yes, I understand there is a historical context for some of this, but this is not how you teach people. You don’t force people to reenact shitty sexist times and then be graded on it. That’s absurd.
Luckily Brandi D. Addison Davis tweeted about it and it went viral:
The school has now responded: “This assignment has been reviewed, and despite its historical context, it does not reflect our district and community values. The matter has been addressed with the teacher, and the assignment was removed.” So that’s something at least.
