This thread proves that James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes’ family had money. They may even have been pretty rich. Not sure why this matters to Marvel fans, but I’m sure it does, haha. So here’s all the proof you need:
He also read the Hobbit the year it came out (1937). but, that was when it came out in england. it didn’t get an american printing until late in 1938, which means that Bucky had one of the 1937 George Allen & Unwin printings. that sold out rapidly because there were only 1,500 printed, *and* they were a high end hardback printing, so they were not cheap and they were hard to get. the publisher put out a 2nd run of 1,500 later that year but the price and format was identical. (would be interesting if he’d mentioned if his copy had B&W or color illustration pages in it, tolkien supplied 4 illustrations he’d made for it, the 2nd printing was full color, the first in B&W)
so if Bucky’s family had money, odds are it was in some business that allowed his father to visit england regularly, since the book came as a surprise to the public.
