This is such a great post about the history of “kawaii culture” in Japan. And it starts with the banning of teenage girls’ cute handwriting in the 1970s. By embracing cuteness these young girls were showing non-conformity with the current standards. So the hyper cute fashions of Japanese girls actually carry such a huge message of feminism and reclaiming their own lives:
