The Pledge of Allegiance is Creepy

I know this is probably going to make a bunch of patriotism loving Americans big mad, but the Pledge of Allegiance is creepy. To other countries, almost all of which don’t do this, it seems super weird and creepy. Here’s why:

  1. It wasn’t too much longer until “Under God” was added to the Pledge, along with “In God We Trust” being put on US currency.

  2. Apparently just before I started primary school (mid-70s) there was a similar pledge in Australia:
“I am an Australian. I love my country. I salute her flag. I honour her Queen. I promise to obey her laws.”
I never actually had to say it. We did sometimes sing the National Anthem, which began “Australia’s sons, let us rejoice”. I recall wondering what was meant by “Australia’s sunset ostriches”. 🙂

  3. As an American adult thinking about the Pledge of Allegiance, I remember all the horror-story plots about someone unsuspectingly or as a joke taking an oath to a sinister invisible being, and getting the dire consequences years later.

  4. There is a pledge in Turkey that students say about how great it is to be Turkish, how you pledge to take care of each other and respect each other, and to love your country and always strive forward and that the biggest elder is Atatürk (a hero who turned Turkey into a republic and faced it forward instead of back. Did a lot of things for Turkey, really….. though a lot of his work is going to hell right now)
