Plot twist: the numbers have always been zero because their soul mate was the doctor that helped deliver them.
Or they were born on the same day at the same hospital, and laid in bassinets next to each other.
For that last one it could be a mystery where they met as infants or young children and they have to refind each other organically
The number has always been zero because their soul mate is EVERYONE. They bond and have empathy with everyone in the world.
The last bit got me, their soulmate was an abortion!
