Sim Kern posted this twitter thread about why we don’t have to worry about billionaires trying to “escape” to space any time soon. We are currently witnessing a dick-measuring space race between Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Richard Branson. And apparently some people are worried that they will escape to a utopian space colony while we are trapped here on Earth as she burns (like in Elysium, or many other dystopian science-fiction). I do however feel like the fictional billionaire S.R. Hadden in Carl Sagan’s Contact was at least somewhat realistic, but he basically went into space to die. Anyway here’s why this probably won’t happen:

What do you think about billionaires trying to escape to space? Let us know in the comments below!
They are researching to make that possible; it won’t happen in our lifetime. When it does happen, only the rich & powerful will be “taking the ride to space”.
It won’t happen in any lifetime. NASA has already done the research. They’ll never even get past the magnetosphere.
CORRECTION: They better hope they never leave the magnetosphere. Unless they want to be the first people to voluntarily die in space from the worst sunburn ever imagined. We don’t have anything that can shield us completely (let alone sufficiently) from solar radiation at those levels.
Well… You had me going along with you until you started the “wealth” rant about Musk being just another “dick beater”… After that you showed your true colors and narrow minded attitude.. later…
I suspect billionaires wont ever want to go live in space, they’ll be working out how to get the industries that made them billionaires up in space and then subsidising workers travel fees until all the worker drones are up in orbit and cant afford to come back and the posh folk can have the earth to themselves.
