When you tell me the execs didn’t know, and refused to learn, German, I have to wonder if it was intended to fail.
More likely to be incompetence.
Its a common story. I remember the first time Starbucks tried to open in Melbourne, and people hated the place so much it literally got picketed by locals. Starbucks has a thing for flavoured coffees. In australia that is a *very* uncool thing to do. We tend towards unsweetened espresso based coffees and flat whites. Whatever a ‘pumpkin spice’ coffee is, its a concept that horrifying to most of us.
They also thought it would be easy to change the law, so they could open nights and Sundays, something that was strictly forbidden at the time. Germany refused to change the laws designed to protect workers’ family time.
