Some sources claim she was Anatha/ Anat-Yahu/Nieth/ a few other names, a Canaanite/Syrian/Egyptian/etc. Tripartite goddess, with a Mother aspect, Wise Warrior Virgin Aspect, and a Crone aspect. After Zeus slew her warrior virgin aspect, he married the mother aspect, renaming her Metis. When she prophecied that her child would kill him, he swallowed her, and Athena popped out of his head. So he renamed the Crone Medusa, spread the fake legend, and when her lack of worship made her weak enough to stay dead, he sent Perseus.
So there’s enough wiggle room to play with.
