Headcanon: everyone in the world is actually bi now (because of the need to have a partner when there are far fewer people now), apart from a few who are just straight – and they’re treated as weirdos. The gay people are technically bi, but just have a preference for one gender over another.
as a bisexual myself i love this hc
maybe the monosexuals (gay, straight, lesbian) only experience sexual/romantic attraction to one gender (like irl) but will settle for polyamory and/or QPR if needed because of the reason you gave, but ONLY if absolutely necessary.
