Top 10 Spaceships From Science Fiction TV and Movies

Welcome to our list of top 10 spaceships and why they are awesome! This list covers ten badass ships from popular sci-fi movies and television series. Some are incredibly powerful, some have been on amazing journeys and some are just home to a beloved crew. Whatever the reasons, they are all epic ships in their own right.

Destiny from Stargate Universe

10. Destiny from Stargate Universe

Starting off the list we have a spaceship from an underappreciated tv show. Destiny is a ship in the Ancient fleet. She was constructed and launched over 50 million years ago from Earth. Destiny’s plan was to follow in the path of the Ancient’s automated ships who constructed and seeded the Stargates throughout the galaxies. Destiny was left empty on it’s automated mission until humans figured out how to unlock the ninth chevron on one of the Stargates. That’s how an unlikely crew ended up stuck on Destiny several billion light years away from Earth. The ship is incredibly powerful, it has energy shields & weapons, shuttles, an FTL drive and a Stargate. This amazing ship collects power from flying into stars… “The ship is powered by the stars themselves. Solar powered – quite literally.”

USS Defiant from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

9. USS Defiant (NX-74205) from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Next on the top 10 spaceships list is the first entry from the Star Trek franchise! The Defiant is certainly one of Star Trek’s most badass ships. Although classified as an “escort vessel” she is basically Starfleet’s first warship, originally intended to fight the Borg. This starship is super overpowered and over-gunned, she was put into storage since she nearly tore herself apart when the engines were tested at full power. But later Captain Sisko pulled her out of storage to help fight the Dominion. She went through so much in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine but was eventually destroyed fighting the Dominion War.

Heart of Gold from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

8. Heart of Gold from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

The coolest thing about this spaceship is of course her Infinite Improbability Drive. As soon as the ship’s drive reaches infinite improbability, it passes through every point in the Universe, thus allowing the ship to cross vast interstellar distances quickly without all that tedious mucking about in hyperspace. President Zaphod Beeblebrox famously kidnaps himself and steals the ship to start off the adventure of Douglas Adams’ epic tale.

USS Voyager from Star Trek: Voyager

7. USS Voyager (NCC-74656) from Star Trek: Voyager

Another Star Trek ship made the top 10 spaceships list! Voyager is an Intrepid-class starship and was the first Federation vessel to explore the Delta quadrant in her epic seven year journey. She has been through so much and is an amazing ship. Much like Enterprise she has everything you’d want in a practical starship plus all the crazy modifications made to her from acquired Delta quadrant technology like the quantum slipstream drive. As Captain Kathryn Janeway said, “This ship has been our home, it’s kept us together, it’s been part of our family.”

Millennium Falcon from Star Wars Top 10 Spaceships

6. Millennium Falcon from Star Wars

Some people might be mad that the Falcon isn’t higher on the list, but there’s just so many great ships! But to be fair, who doesn’t love the Falcon!? She’s the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy and she’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs! Even though it was Luke’s X-Wing that blew up the Death Star I don’t think he could have done it without Han showing up to back him up with the Millennium Falcon. “You’re all clear, kid, now let’s *blow* this thing and go home!” It’s also worth mentioning when Lando flew into the second Death Star’s superstructure and blew it up. And who else says the iconic phrase “PUNCH IT!” every time they start a car?

Serenity from Firefly Top 10 Spaceships

5. Serenity from Firefly

Serenity is the “little engine that could” entry on this top 10 spaceships list. She may not be the fastest ship is the ‘Verse, she may not have any weapons but she’s by far one of the most loved. Her crew is what makes her so much more special than any other Firefly-class transport ship. “But it ain’t all buttons and charts, little albatross. You know what the first rule of flyin’ is? Love. You can learn all the math in the ‘Verse, but take a boat in the air you don’t love, she’ll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells ya she’s hurtin’ ‘fore she keens. Makes her home.”

Galactica from Battlestar Galactica

4. Galactica (BS 75) from Battlestar Galactica

We love this ship, even though she was decommissioned and out of date she becomes humanities last hope. It’s a classic “they don’t make them like they used to” story. Galactica was built during the early days of the first Cylon War. She’s a veteran battlestar and was the last of her kind still in service, prior to her decommissioning by the Colonial Fleet. She was turned into a museum ship as a memorial to the Cylon War. But when Cylon hostilities suddenly reemerge and take the fleet by surprise Galactica is quickly brought back to combat condition and unexpectedly becomes the leader of the remaining ragtag Fleet. So Say We All.

Moya from Farscape Top 10 Spaceships

3. Moya from Farscape

Our first living entry on this top 10 spaceships list. Moya is more than just a starship. Like all Leviathan transports, Moya is a sentient, organic space ship with no weapons. She is bio-mechanoid so she contains both biological and technological components. She was originally a prisoner transport in captivity of the Peacekeepers. Then John Crichton and the other escaped prisoners removed her of her control collar allowing her to be free. Moya is capable of only one defensive maneuver, Starburst. If Moya Starbursts she can travel distances that would take other ships far longer to travel.

We also love the story of Moya & Pilot. Moya was captured by a Peacekeeper squad at a young age and was bonded with a Pilot who is her operator, companion, and link to the crew of the ship. She is both a friend and home to the zany crew of Farcsape and they have been through many bizarre adventures together. Moya brought them all together and gave them a home.

USS Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation

2. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) from Star Trek: The Next Generation

And almost topping off the top 10 spaceships list, the number one Star Trek ship. This is without question our favorite Enterprise and our favorite Federation starship. In her time this Galaxy-class explorer was the Federation flagship. She could go almost warp 10 and had shields, phasers, photon torpedoes, but was also fully equipped for science and exploration. She had pretty much everything you’d want in a practical starship. We can only hope Roddenberry’s vision for the future is one humans can actually achieve.

TARDIS from Doctor Who Top 10 Spaceships

1. The TARDIS from Doctor Who

And coming in at number one is the iconic TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space)! The Doctor’s TARDIS is our favorite ship of all. If we could board one of these ships it would certainly be her. She’s a space-time vessel, so not only a spaceship, but a time machine as well. She’s also famously bigger on the inside, or as Clara said, smaller on the outside! Although the Doctor’s stolen TARDIS is an unreliable, obsolete TT Type 40, Mark 1 TARDIS with a broken chameleon circuit, she is (almost) always by his side.

The doctor has many pet names for her such as “sexy”, “the blue box”, “the police box” or “old girl”. She has a telepathically based universal translation system for passengers and also has a degree of sentience. The ship’s consciousness even comes to life in human form as Idris in ‘The Doctor’s Wife’. “I wanted to see the universe, so I stole a Time Lord and I ran away. And you were the only one mad enough.”

That concludes our top 10 spaceships list!

Ok, so that’s list and the reasons these are all awesome ships! Sci-fi fans will likely have strong opinions about this so please tell us why we are right or wrong about these spaceships! What ships are we missing? We’d love to hear about your favorite ships too. Please comment below with your opinions and your personal favorite science fiction ships!

  1. Rocinate from “The Expanse”. Technology that either already exists or could plausibly be created in the not too distant future. And home to a great crew.
