I think the closest I’ve seen to this is in Heinlein’s The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, where the protagonist, whose arm was amputated, had a number of different arms that he could use as tools and one “social” arm.
Pretty comprehensive of the possibilities for a book copyrighted in 1966, I think.
