The Problem With The Nuclear Family Model

arofluxstuff posted this interesting take on the problem with the nuclear family in society today. If you didn’t know, a nuclear family refers to a family group consisting of parents and their children. It is in contrast to a single-parent family, the larger extended family, or a family with more than two parents. Nuclear families typically center on a married couple which may have any number of children.

Now of course there is nothing at all wrong with living in a nuclear family situation if it’s your choice and it works for you. But our society pressures everyone to live this way as if it is the only “right” way to live. Not to mention that this model was built for the times when only one parent worked to support the whole family, and that is basically a pipe dream for most today.

  1. That’s a bit harsh. Especially the idea that it’s been used as a deliberate means of control and oppression, specifically by capitalism as well. That’s just ridiculous. Not that I’m a fan of capitalism, I just mean this specific idea is ridiculous.

  2. I would also note, the nuclear family is a subset of the extended family, which was the norm throughout much of history, almost none of which was capitalistic, but feudalistic or monarchic.

  3. Just gonna throw this truth out there… We are ALL born into this world howling and covered in someone’s blood… There is no RIGHT way to be raised up… Just be decent humans… At the end of days we all get lowered into the same ground !!~!! Just M2C 🙂
